For a few weeks now, Cooper has demonstrated his readiness for serious potty training. He tells us when he needs to pee and we take him to the potty and he goes on the toilet. He doesn't do it with poop just yet but we know that is usually the final step in training and often the only way to overcome the fear of doing that on the potty is by having uncomfortable accidents. He's so proud of himself when he pees on the potty and loves picking out a sticker for a reward each time he goes.
He has even told us when out at restaurants and he was totally cool with using the big public toilet with the paper seat cover on it! When he was finished he ran around to the back of the toilet and lifted his foot to press the flusher lever! He has seen me use my foot to flush public toilets when I bring him in with me. That just cracked me up! But I was seriously impressed that he wasn't afraid of the public toilet and was willing to use it. Yay!
We've kept him in diapers the past couple weeks since I was going in for surgery and decided we didn't want to overwhelm Cooper with changes and stressful situations as I'd be in the hospital for several nights. But now that I'm home recovering nicely and my mom is coming out mid-week to spend a couple weeks with us, we figured it's time to go for it.
We consulted our daycare provider for guidance on the methods that have been most successful for the kids there and unanimously the verdict was to put him in underpants and send in with many extra pairs for the first week and just tell him what would happen and they will gladly deal with it during the day when he's there. We decided to buy several giant packs of character undies at a discount store so that the daycare teachers can throw away the ones that end up soiled from poop accidents and we'll bring home the wet ones and launder those. They tell us that a week or less is all it will take to get him trained using this method so long as we follow through and do the same thing at home. He will still get night time diapers or pull-ups at night only to help him sleep through the night.
We are all excited about this - including Cooper. In fact, telling him about how he'll be a majorly big boy tomorrow in his new underpants at school helped him settle down and go to bed after an exciting evening of July 4th fireworks.
Bob and I will both bring Cooper to daycare tomorrow since since we are both home and we can go in and talk to him about it again when he gets there and we can let his teacher know we're moving forward and we'll both hear her advice for how to handle it at home.
It's so exciting to think that he'll be potty trained by the end of the summer. My little baby isn't a baby anymore! Thank you, Lord, for getting us this far! We know we are blessed and we are so grateful. xoxo
Wish us luck! ;)
