Baby steps

Well, not ACTUAL steps as in walking...but steps as in toward getting the baby to sleep in his crib regularly.

We started with naps and for a week we've been getting him sleepy at nap time, rocking him to sleep and placing him in the crib. Sometimes he instantly feels the crib (or maybe the slow descent into it) and opens his eyes and cries. ugh. Other times he's so asleep he doesn't notice. Either way, he IS napping in the crib three times a day.

Tonight, Bob convinced me to try to get Cooper to sleep in his crib at night. We agreed that if he wakes frequently (more so than usual - and the usual is pretty darn often in the range of every 1-3 hours). OK. Well, we got through three 10-minute increments of him sleeping - each followed by 10-20 minutes of getting him back asleep and back in the crib and then him waking up and crying just minutes later (wash, rinse, repeat) before we realized this is going to be BRUTAL (OK, I knew it would be bad, but 10 minutes!). I have to be up early to get to the office so this last time he got up he was brought back to bed with us. We'll try again tomorrow when Bob says he'd be more willing to help getting Cooper back into the crib after all the wakings. This is going to be a very interesting week (maybe a better word would be 'exhausting). ;/

I know this is probably a total contradiction to my "good Earth mother" style of parenting, however, I did the Ferber method with Gavin and Elliott Richard and it worked for us. Gavin was 6m at the time. Elliott Richard was 3y but no matter how you cut it - they went to bed awake and sleepy and fussed with me close by until they self-soothed themselves to sleep. It took about a week and a half with Gavin. A few days with Elliott Richard. A lot of parents don't like the Ferber method but I say "whatever it takes". ;)

Oh and GOOD LUCK! Hopefully it won't take you guys too long to figure out what works for Cooper. *hugs*

Good luck. Hopefully Mr Cooper will learn soon that in his crib he can roll around and have the space ALL to himself! (and not have to listen to Daddy snore) Do you play banjo music in there for him? We CONSTANTLY have jazz playing in Colton's room since that is what calms him.

Okay, so this will probably be a shocker... Jr slept great in his crib till he started teething. Then we moved (and he continued to teeth) and he was sleeping in a pack n play. This past week I finally picked up a crib and bought another crib mattress... someone once told me (don't remember who) that babies that co-sleep prefer softer mattresses then the stiffer (more recommended) ones because when they cosleep they are usually sleeping on something that is considerably softer then the "recommended" (AKA stiff as a board) crib mattress. Hate to say it, but they where right. Prior to last night Jr would sleep no more then 3-4 hours at a time at night (usually less, unless he was co-sleeping) but last night he slept 9 STRAIGHT hours and then took a 4 hour nap. He's not sick, not teething or anything else that I can think of that would cause him to sleep so good. Just my experiance so I HTH. either way - good luck!
