So, after a horrendous night (we're talking 3+ hours of constant bone-chilling screaming), we carted Cooper to the pediatrician's office this morning to demand some changes with the AR meds - namely to insist that he be put back on Zantac (and an increased dose based on current weight) until the Prevacid is fully activated - which according to numerous sources online could take 1-2 weeks.
We asked to be seen by Dr.Brian since Dr.Mike had blown me/us off when I called last to discuss these issues. Thankfully Dr.Brian was there and he was wonderful. He agreed the Zantac is necessary to regain some comfort level for Cooper while we wait for the Prevacid to kick in. He ALSO agreed it's POSSIBLE (though unlikely) that Cooper is reacting to the lactose/milk protein contained in the solutab version of the Prevacid we have started to give him so he agreed to prescribe the suspension (liquid) formulation which does not have the lactose/milk proteins in it. AND...he questioned why Cooper is on Alimentum (super expensive formula intended for babies with milk protein allergy) because his record showed no traces of blood in his stool sample meaning that he likely did NOT have a milk protein allergy. AGH! I explained that Dr.Mike thought that it might still help with the colic symptoms since the formula is pre-broken down - because at that point I was beyond desperate for some relief from the night time screaming.
Dr.Brian said once we get the reflux meds working for Cooper we will try to test him again for the milk protein allergy and if he tests negative for it we will then be able to start weaning him off the special formula and back onto the original formula he first had when we brought him home from the hospital.
We're going to resume the Zantac (at a higher dose) and continue with the Prevacid (new liquid formulation which we can pick up Monday) and see how Cooper's feeling on Wednesday of next week and call Dr.Brian with an update.
PS - While there, Cooper weighed in at 11 lbs, 7 oz.
