Cooper's protective 'big sister'

As we suspected, Hunter (our 7 year-old golden retriever) has proven to be a wonderful 'big sister' to Cooper. She is very protective and watchful of Cooper. Whenever Cooper cries or makes a squeak, Hunter jumps to her feet and comes to find Bob or me to alert us to the fact. Of course, we're always already aware of it since we're always with the baby. When Hunter sees the car seat carrier empty she gets concerned and sits pointing to it and barking to alert us to the fact that the baby is not in it (which, of course we're already aware of because if he's not in the carrier then he's in his bassinet or in our arms).

This morning Bob noticed Hunter was standing by her food dish waiting for her breakfast and she was falling asleep standing up - that's because every time the baby made a sound last night she jumped up to investigate. So, Bob and I are not the only ones dealing with sleep deprivation right now. It's too cute!

We're so thrilled that Hunter has taken an immediate liking to our little Cooper and is being vigilant and protective of him. We knew she would and it's wonderful to see her in action.

I may be a little biased... as a fellow golden parent, but my family use to breed them too - but I've heard lots of stories of many goldens (ESPECIALLY females) being very protective and sibling like :). She's probably going through the same things you are ;) she's got another person in her "pack" to protect, and it sounds like she is doing a mighty fine job ;). I just hope my two follow her lead ;)

Awww, such a cute story! I can't wait to see how Smokey is with our Baby. He is also 7 and very protective of children. He's been protective of my belly the entire pg. I think its cute how she was falling asleep at her dish!

That right there is the difference between cats and dogs. ;o) When Mia makes enough noise to wake up the cats, they just move to the other side of the house and stay there. Your son is beautiful! I'm so happy for you!!

It will be even more fun watching them interact as Cooper gets older and starts to play with Hunter. Raymond does get annoyed with Sam (he's almost 3 so he gets annoyed with everything/one) but it is really cute when he points to Sam and says, "that's my doggie" and runs over and gives him a big kiss!
