The formula experiment

Two weeks ago we had to stop giving Cooper the formula he was started on at the hospital because he had three projectile vomiting episodes within 36 hours and the docs suggested switching formula in case he has a lactose sensitivity/intolerance. If the switch didn't stop vomiting then we would have to get an ultrasound of his tummy to see if he has pyloric stenosis.

I didn't want to stop consuming dairy myself even though I was nursing (stopped nursing/pumping a week or 10 days ago b/c my supply was so minuscule it wasn't working out - more about that another time). So we decided we'd just start with the formula and if the problem persisted I'd eliminate dairy from my diet and schedule the ultrasound for Cooper just in case.

For the past two weeks Cooper has been on a lactose-free formula and he's been doing great - no vomiting - just standard baby spit up which is A-OK.

The doc said that we could/should consider trying to reintroducing the former formula to see if it triggers the vomiting again - to help determine if he actually has a lactose insensitivity/intolerance. We don't want to keep giving him lactose-free products if he doesn't have an issue with lactose as that could contribute to the development of a problem eventually. We have a stock pile of this formula too so if he can tolerate it well we'd love to use it up. If not, we'll donate it to a women's shelter in the area.

So....today the experiment began. During his 5 pm feeding Cooper got the formula that he used to have. He spit up a little bit of it but that's not unusual so I can't attribute it to the formula (not yet anyway). It's been about 90 minutes since then and so far so good (fingers and everything else crossed). Holding breath and waiting to see how the night progresses.

Good luck with the "experiment". /isn't it quite the experience getting to know everything about these little ones?
