Preliminary results...

...of the formula experiment are in. Not good. First two feedings of the "new" stuff were great - Cooper slept soundly and even beyond the 3 hour mark which was promising. However, once past midnight (the witching hour around here!), all hell broke loose. Cooper spit up (vomited actually) nearly all of the formula he consumed during that feeding and was screaming and wiggling around (arched back, stiffening up) like he would when he has terrible gas pains. He was also angry (I think) because we stopped the feeding and he'd not really gotten anything out of it (since he threw it up). So we rocked him and gave him Mylicon drops for the gas and gave it about 15 minutes to work before giving him a new bottle of the lactose-free formula (which he quickly and easily drank). The poor kid was pooping every 10 minutes, tooting up a storm too - clearly his belly was aching and he was not happy (screaming). All subsequent feedings have been with the lactose-free formula and have been stress-free. His poops have even been back to normal already! I thought it would take longer for his system to readjust but as SOON as he started drinking the lactose formula the farts and explosive/watery pooping started, and as SOON as we put him back on the lactose-free formula it stopped.

So...should we conclude that he is lactose sensitive/intolerant??? That's the question of the week. Bob got online and tried researching it to find out if there should have been a gradual reintroduction or cold turkey (which we did) and most sites said cold turkey. Bob wants to try to mix the two formulas together for a few feedings today - I told him he can do that while he's watching Cooper and I'm out running errands haha.

We're going to have to ask Cooper's doctor if we should give up on trying to get him back on the lactose formula or if we should try another approach. If any of you have any ideas or similar experiences you can share to help shed some light on this we'd love to hear about it.

Soon my "errands" are going to be secret naps in the car in the grocery store parking lot - LOL - I'M EXHAUSTED from these all-nighters.

Sorry it didn't go better. If we lived closer I would suggest letting Cooper & Colton hang out during the night. We also had another bad night last night. Good idea about sleeping in the grocery store parking lot... We went out to lunch and nick drank coffee so he could stay up with Colton when we got home. Now, Guess who's sleeping and who's awake with the screaming child...

I'm not sure if you've tried this or not, but we did for Wyatt (and actually we do it for our dog too when she's being switched to a new food), but have you tried to slowly move him? Like, if he's drinking 4 ounces total, give him on of the "milk" based formulas and three of the lactose free? And then see how he responds to a gradual change? That might work.

So sorry it didn't get better? Just wondering...are you warming the formula? Josh seemed to respond better to warmed formula. It really minimized his gassy episodes too. We kept warm boiled water in a thermos and mixed his formula that way.
